Tooth Bleaching

Bleaching is a cosmetic dental procedure that whitens the teeth using a bleaching solution. Teeth darken for a veriety of reasons: coffee and tea consumption, smoking, antibiotic use, excessive fluoride, or simply age. The desire for a brighter smile and whiter teeth is very strong, and dentist-supervised tooth bleaching is the safest, most effective way to lighten the color of the teeth.

Bleaching is successful in at least 90% of patients, lasting up to five years, though it may not be an option for everyone. Teeth darkened from age, coffee, tea, or smoking respond better to tooth bleaching, while the gray stains caused by fluoride or antibiotic (tetracycline) use are harder to treat. Bleaching does not lighten artificial materials such as crowns or tooth-colored fillings, or your dentist may discourage bleaching if you have sensitive teeth or periodontal disease.

Dentist-supervised bleaching can be done in the office or at home. With the "in-office" method a strong bleaching agent containing peroxide is applied to your teeth; often a special light is then used to quicken the action of the bleaching material. The "at-home" technique involves use of a custom-made mouthguard into which the bleaching agent is placed. The duration and frequency of treatment varies: your dentist will discuss these options with you.

There are several over-the-counter tooth whitening kits available at drug stores, but bleaching should be done under the guidance of a dentist: your dentist is best able to advise you if your teeth and gums are healthy enough for bleaching to be safe and effective, and to determine which bleaching method is appropriate in your unique situation.
