Restorative Dentistry |
Restorative Dentistry refers to the restoration of natural teeth that have been damaged, decayed or lost. Crowns and bridges comprise a major part of Restorative Dentistry. Also included are permanent implants and, to an extent, onlays, inlays and veneers. "Restoration" in dentistry means replacing a tooth using metal and/or tooth-colored materials. Once a dentist has examined your teeth and evaluated your dental and medical history, he/she will be ready to provide a diagnosis and treatment options. A crown may be constructed to restore a damaged tooth back to its original form. A crown is a "cap" that fits over a tooth that has had a root canal, or is broken, chipped, badly decayed, discolored or misshapen. Porcelain and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are typically used for front teeth, because they look like natural teeth. A bridge is often the best solution to replace missing teeth when there are healthy teeth on either side of the gap. Left untreated, the space left by one or more missing teeth may cause remaining teeth to "drift" leading to a change in the bite, gum disease, or decay. The replacement teeth, or bridge, can be made of porcelain (just like crowns) and looks like your natural teeth. The bridge can be attached to two crowns placed on the two teeth on either side of the gap. Veneers are restorations used to fix the front teeth. They can be used to whiten teeth, close spaces between teeth, smooth out the shape of a misshapen tooth, and create a great smile. Removable partial dentures consist of replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored plastic base, used to replace multiple missing teeth. Whether you need to repair a single damaged or missing tooth or need a "full mouth reconstruction", restorative dentistry can give you back your smile and confidence. Your cosmetic dentist can discuss the many options with you. |
