Prosthodontics

   Prosthodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the restoration of oral function, comfort, appearance and health by restoring missing teeth and associated tissues. Prosthodontists restore oral function as well as aesthetics by creating dentures, crowns and implant retained/supported restorations. There are four primary sub-specialties:

* Fixed Prosthodontics is concerned with fabrication of crowns, bridges (fixed partial dentures), veneers, and restoration of teeth following root canal treatment (such as the foundation required prior to crown fabrication).

* Implant Prosthodontics involves the replacement of missing teeth and/or related structures by restorations that are attached to dental implants, such as implant crowns and implant dentures.

* Removeable Prosthodontics is the branch of prosthodontics concerned with replacement of missing teeth by artificial substitutes that are removable from the mouth including complete, interim partial, and removable dentures.

* Maxillofacial Prosthodontics is a sub-specialty dedicated to the prosthetic correction of defects resulting from cancer, traumatic injuries, and congenital abnormalities.
