Periodontics

Periodontics is the study of diseases of the gums, bone, and other structures supporting the teeth. Cosmetic dentistry includes periodontics: the size, shape, integrity and health of gum tissue greatly influence the aesthetic appearance of even the most perfect teeth. Too much gum tissue can lead to teeth that look short and stubby, while too little gum tissue can lead to exposure of root surfaces and teeth that look too long. Cosmetic dental treatments such as whitening or porcelain veneers still depend upon healthy gum tissue to make a smile look its best. More information can be found in Gum Surgery.

Gums directly affect the health as well as the appearance of your teeth. Gums are like a blanket of soft tissue that protects the underlying bone, teeth and roots of teeth. Gums can become infected and diseased the same way teeth can decay. If plaque is not regularly removed from teeth and gums by brushing and flossing, it becomes a harbor for bacteria which can cause tooth decay and gum disease.

Periodontal health should be achieved in the least invasive and most cost-effective manner. Non-surgical periodontal treatments include scaling, root planing (a careful cleaning of root surfaces to remove plaque from deep periodontal pockets and to smooth the tooth root) and, in some cases, adjunctive therapy such as local delivery of antimicrobials. If non-surgical therapy does not restore the health of the tissue around your teeth, your periodontist may recommend periodontal surgery.
