Partial Dentures

A partial denture is a removable dental appliance that replaces multiple missing teeth. As opposed to complete dentures which are used to replace a complete set of teeth (upper and/or lower), partial dentures are used to fill in the spaces caused by missing teeth.

An important step in maintaining a healthy smile is to replace missing teeth. When teeth are missing, the remaining ones can change position, drifting into the surrounding space. Teeth that are crooked can damage tissues in the mouth and may be difficult to clean. As a result, there is a risk of tooth decay and periodontal (gum) disease, which can lead to the loss of additional teeth. The use of partial dentures stops this process by preventing other teeth from changing position. Other benefits include improved speech and chewing ability and support for facial muscles, which can enhance one's appearance and smile.

Removable partial dentures utilize a metal framework which connects a plastic gum-colored base with replacement teeth. There are two different ways that partial dentures can attach to your natural teeth: with metal clasps or precision attachments. Precision attachments usually require crowns on your natural teeth, but they are generally more esthetic and are nearly invisible.

To make partial dentures, the dentist measures the jaws and the bite relationship (the space between the jaws), and makes an impression. The shade of the replacement teeth will be made either from one's natural teeth or an existing partial denture if it is present. A dental laboratory is then given the impression, bite and shade measurements to use in fabricating the partial dentures customized to fit your unique oral characteristics.

Your dentist will give you specific instructions on how long the denture should be worn and when it should be removed. Initially, you may be asked to wear your partial denture all the time, which is the quickest way to identify those denture parts that may need adjustment. It is essential that you follow your dentist's instructions on how to clean and care for your partial dentures.
