Clear Braces

Clear ("invisible") braces are a much less noticeable alternative to the traditional metal braces used to correct crowded or misaligned teeth. Clear braces are a relatively inexpensive option and are especially popular among adolescents, teenagers, and patients who are shy, self-conscious or are frequently in the public eye (i.e. models, actors, public speakers).

Clear braces are made of high-tech ceramic materials developed as a spinoff to the NASA space program. They are virtually see-through, and are typically used on the front teeth where they blend with the natural tooth color. Clear braces made of ceramic or sapphire consist of brackets which are bonded on to the front side of the teeth to which wires are attached, allowing the dentist to move the teeth into straighter positions. A third type, lingual braces, consist of brackets glued to the back (not front) of the teeth, making them invisible when you smile. Clear braces made of new materials, such as polymer composites, continue to appear on the market. In addition, a new type of invisible braces (such as Invisalign) has recently become available. They consist of a series of custom-molded plastic trays, each of which is worn for two weeks before being replaced with the next set in the series.

Clear braces are an ideal choice for patients who prefer the least conspicuous, most affordable braces. They do not stain, though the bonding adhesive may discolor over time. They are widely applicable and are especially appropriate in moderate to severe cases of crowded or rotated teeth.
